Stem Cell Therapy for Cerebral Palsy

Stem cell therapy for cerebral palsy is in its infancy, but offers hope for many people and their parents that suffer from this condition. Cerebral palsy is a disorder of the brain, caused by damage either during pregnancy, shortly before birth or during the delivery of the child. Symptoms include lack of coordination, seizures, speaking difficulties and even blindness, deafness and mental retardation is some cases.

Conventional treatments for cerebral palsy have limited effect, and there is no cure as yet for this distressing condition. The most common cause (around 40%) is tissue hypoxia, or a restriction in the supply of oxygen of the tissues of the central nervous system due to a reduction in blood supply. These particularly involve nerve cells passing down the spinal cord and connecting to the arms and legs. Read more…

Stem Cell Research Pros and Cons: Stem Cell Ethics

Stem cell research pros and cons will be discussed as long as stem cell ethics remain an issue. It is not the stem cells that are the problem, but their source, and while no body, religious or secular, advocates that stem cells should not be used to treat human medical conditions, there is a great deal of controversy where these cells should originate.

Before the pros and cons of stem cell research can be discussed, it is first necessary to understand what they are, and what the term ‘embryonic stem cells’ actually refers to. Contrary to the belief in some quarters, such cells are not harvested from dead embryos and fetuses, but in fact come from a less emotive source, although one that still gives rise to ethical discussion. Stem Cell Controversy: Why Are Stem Cells Controversial?

The stem cell controversy rages on irrespective of the success of stem cell therapy in many fields of medicine. Many wonder why stem cells are so controversial, why others wonder why they are still allowed to be used in medical research.  It is a very emotive topic, and one in which both sides of the argument often use their hearts before their heads when they publish their views. What is Umbilical Cord Blood Banking: Is Cord Blood Worth Storing?

We shall discuss the topic of umbilical cord blood banking before discussing whether cord blood is worth storing or not.  First, however, some clarification on what cord blood is and how it can be used for stem cell research and treatment.

Cord blood cells are collected from the umbilical cord, while stem cells can also be harvested from the tissue of the cord known as Wharton’s Jelly. The blood itself contains large quantities of Hematopoietic stem cells (HSC) [1] that can be differentiated to form blood cells. HSC cells are used to generate white and red blood cells and platelets, and treat conditions such as immune system related genetic diseases, blood disorders and some cancers. Read more…

Stem Cell Transplant Procedures

A stem cell transplant procedure involves the injection or infusion of stem cells to replace diseased or damaged body cells.  Most stem cell therapy is in the process of testing, but if you have a blood disorder, such as multiple myeloma, leukemia or lymphoma, a stem cell transplant can aid your body in generating the white blood cells you need to maintain your immune system, the red cells needed to avoid anemia and the platelets to help you avoid excessive bleeding. Umbilical Cord Blood Banks in India and Their Costs

There are many umbilical cord blood banks in India, and the whole concept of cord blood banking has sparked a furious argument regarding ethics and the effectiveness of the therapy. The scientific and medical view is that private blood banks cannot offer what they promise, because it is highly unlikely that stem cells taken from the umbilical cord of the donor will be of use to that individual later in life. What Are Cord Blood Stem Cells Used For?

Umbilical cord blood cells are taken from the cord of a newborn child at birth. Such blood cells contain stem cells that can be differentiated to various types of blood cell to treat a variety of conditions. In fact, the tissue of the umbilical cord can also be used as a rich source of mesenchymal stem cells (MSC) that can be used to form connective tissue, cartilage, bone cells and also be used to reduce the severity of many inflammatory conditions such as arthritis. Stem Cell Therapy for Macular Degeneration

Tests on the use of stem cell therapy for macular degeneration have indicated that this is a viable treatment for the condition. Age related macular degeneration (AMD) affects a part of the retina known as the macula, found over the back of the eyeball behind the retina. Degeneration of the macula leads to loss of central vision:  the patient retains peripheral vision but is blind to forward sight. Read more…

Finding Stem Cell Treatment: Popular Clinics in India and Around World

Many people suffering from incurable diseases have question – where to get stem cell treatment ? So we have tried to compile a list of stem cell transplant centers around the world.

There are many different stem cell clinics worldwide, some specializing in the use of stem cells to treat a specific condition, and others offering therapy for multiple illnesses and medical conditions.  Although most countries permit the use of stem cells in research, their use in treating humans has not yet been universally adopted, and clinics are not to found in all countries.

Nevertheless, among the individual clinics you will find individual American and British companies that offer treatment in a number of overseas medical facilities, and also consortiums of clinics that have got together to promote their services in those countries where such treatment has not yet been approved.

Here is a list of some of the world’s top stem cell treatment centers and clinics. You will find that some centers provide an American contact number, making it easier for most people to contact representatives of the clinic. Contact phone numbers or emails are provided where offered. Read more…
